France calling! Expats flock

Culture, wine and amazing entertainment. If you’re moving to France those perks are just the tip of the iceberg for you.

France is famous for being one of the world’s artistic hubs, offering much in terms of culture, cuisine, history and more. It also boasts a lower crime rate than other cities around Europe. Its educational system is considered to be among the best in the world.

All of these give people a number of reasons to move to France. In fact, it is home to an increasingly high number of expats. Retirement there is attractive to a large number of people, with more than 15% of the total population living in France over the age of 65. It is also estimated that there are currently 4.3 million foreigners living in France, the majority of which are from elsewhere in the EU.

The cost of living in France is a hot topic but many will be pleased to know that even with its notoriety, linked to relatively high levels of value added tax, France is generally on a par with prices found elsewhere in mainland Europe.

The main reason for this concerns the fact that the retail market in France is hugely competitive and many traders operate on very small profit margins. During the 2012 Mercer survey Paris, placed in position 37, was named as one of the top 50 most expensive cities in the world in which to live.
