Moving to France: 5 advantages

France is lauded as the European capital for all that is good in life; culture, cuisine and character. So can you think of a better place to lean back and enjoy your retirement? We can’t.

Here at five (among many others) of the best advantages there are to living in la belle France.

1. France has the advantages of a Mediterranean country. With its hours-long shopping trips around lovely open air markets, calm Sunday afternoons and warm people (yes, the ‘arrogant’ label is nothing but a stereotype), every minute is to be cherished.

2. The French government spends more on ‘welfare' than almost any other EU country: over 30% of GDP, meaning the country has a comprehensive social security (sécurité sociale) system covering healthcare, injuries at work, family allowances, unemployment insurance, and old age (pensions), invalidity and death benefits

3. While haggling on the market might not be successful, when it comes to making big purchases such as a car or a house, be assured that you will not be rushed into the deal. It is a gentle process during which the salesman helps you with all the paperwork (mounds).

4. If you’re moving to France well before your retirement and you have children with you, then they will likely benefit greatly from the school system. Strict but fair, the system in French high schools improves not only their grades but behaviour too.

5. Compared with other south European drivers, who seem to do everything but concentrate on driving, French drivers are on the ball and considerate.
