Retire in Burgundy

To many, Burgundy is seen as a seemingly endless vista of rolling countryside and vineyards. But look a little closer and you will find a whole host of activities and different scenery to take your fancy. You will find rivers, canals, cycle paths, horse riding trails, a national park, markets in ancient towns, historic castles and chateaux’s, fantastic food and of course, the wine caves that the region is renowned for. If you choose to retire in Burgundy, your life will be surrounded by wine, from tastings and festivals to vineyard walks and chateaux tours. Wine production is an important part of the economy.

Located about two hours southeast of Paris, Burgundy is easily accessible by car, train or even plane from anywhere else in the country. It's a great place to live not only if you love wine, but also if you enjoy the great outdoors. The famous "Tour de Boulogne a velo" route offers an expanse of great cycling. And in addition, there are rivers and canals to explore by boat, barge or canoe that often have well-kept cycle paths running alongside them. There is also a large network of walking trails that date back to the Middle Ages that are sure to have breath-taking views along the way.

If your French lingo is not quite up to scratch, then fear not because the locals in Burgundy are very friendly and welcoming towards outsiders. Villagers are accustomed to tourists in this region and are also aware of how important they are to their livelihoods and economy.

Burgundy is a region that will never go out of date but you will be amazed at the cost of buying property here. It’s surprisingly inexpensive, especially at the current rate of exchange, making it the ideal place to buy a retirement property. Younger people and families have been moving away from this region for years in search of employment opportunities, leaving many homes unoccupied. But as a retiree, you are probably less interested in finding work and more concerned with enjoying your surroundings, meaning you're able to take advantage of an oversupplied market.

If you've dreamt of retiring in a beautiful French country home of your own, especially if you're up for a renovation project, this is a buying opportunity too big to ignore.
