The French Riviera, that picture-perfect stretch of beach-hugging Mediterranean coastline that’s a playground to the rich-and-famous.
1. Monaco
Bordered by France on three sides, the small region of Monaco is a bastion of glitz and glamour, with yachts moored in the harbour. While it’s typically known as a key destination for the ultra-rich, those short on cash can still enjoy themselves here. Excursions to stately sights like the Prince’s Palace, Fort Antoine, and Monaco Cathedral are enjoyable and won’t break the bank. But then there's the Monte-Carlo casino, so why not splash the cash a little?
2. Menton
The town of Menton, perhaps the best-kept secret on the French Riviera, has all the beauty of the better-known coastal villages but a fraction of the crowds. Its half-dozen beaches are all but empty in the off-season, and boutique-filled alleyways are relatively free of bargain-hunting tourists. This slower pace means you can revel in town’s old world ambiance. Boasting over 300 days of sunshine a year, exceptional gardens, and tasty Italian cuisine due to its position on the Franco-Italian border, an afternoon spent here is a great complement to a Riviera trip.
3. Èze
Nestled in craggy cliffs high above the sea, the medieval village of Èze is an impressive addition to your French Riviera itinerary. The well-preserved stone buildings, winding alleyways, and dramatic Mediterranean backdrop make this tiny village seem like a set staged for a postcard. Bring your camera and a pair of good walking shoes - steep paths within the village bring you to the summit, which is a dizzying 1,400 feet above sea level.
4. Old Town, Nice
Nice’s colourful Vieille Ville, or Old Town, is a delightful maze of narrow streets packed full of personality-laden eateries, galleries, and shops. Cafes fill the many squares in the Old Town, so take the opportunity to sit down, enjoy a coffee, and people-watch the day away. You can also grab a bite to eat at one of the many amazing restaurants.
